The Best Violin Concertos Every Player Should Know
As a professional orchestral violinist, I've performed countless concertos. Here are the essential works every serious violinist should study.
Baroque Era
Vivaldi - The Four Seasons
The gateway to baroque concertos. Each season has unique character and technical demands. "Summer" and "Winter" are particularly exciting.
Bach - Violin Concerto in E Major
Elegant and intricate. Perfect for learning baroque style and ornamentation.
Classical Period
Mozart - Violin Concerto No. 5 "Turkish"
Charming, elegant, and deceptively difficult. The "Turkish" section in the final movement is delightful.
Romantic Era
Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto in E minor
One of the most beloved concertos. Lyrical, dramatic, and technically demanding. A rite of passage for advancing students.
Brahms - Violin Concerto in D Major
Massively challenging but deeply rewarding. Requires mature musicianship and solid technique.
Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto in D Major
Brilliant and virtuosic. The finale is thrilling to play and hear.
Sibelius - Violin Concerto in D minor
Dark, Nordic, and intensely beautiful. One of my personal favorites.
20th Century
Barber - Violin Concerto
Neo-romantic and accessible. The second movement is hauntingly beautiful.
Prokofiev - Violin Concerto No. 2
Modern but melodic. Great introduction to 20th-century music.
Learning Path
I recommend this order:
- Vivaldi - Four Seasons (movements)
- Mozart - Concerto No. 5
- Mendelssohn
- Tchaikovsky or Sibelius
- Brahms
- Modern works
Each builds technical and musical skills needed for the next level.
Beyond the Notes
What makes a great concerto performance:
- Understanding the historical context
- Studying multiple recordings
- Working with a skilled pianist
- Performing with orchestra (even if just once)
- Finding your own interpretation
These concertos aren't just pieces to learn - they're journeys into musical expression, technical mastery, and artistic growth.
