Preparing for ABRSM Grade 8: A Student's Perspective
As a 16-year-old violin student currently preparing for my Grade 8 ABRSM exam, I wanted to share my journey and what I've learned along the way.
Why Grade 8 Matters
Grade 8 is a significant milestone. It's required for most UK university music programs and demonstrates serious musical achievement. The exam includes:
- Three pieces (one from each list)
- Scales and arpeggios (all keys, 3 octaves)
- Sight-reading
- Aural tests
My Preparation Timeline
6 Months Out: Chose my pieces with my teacher:
- List A: Bach Partita No. 3 in E Major - Preludio
- List B: Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor - 1st movement
- List C: Kreisler Praeludium and Allegro
5 Months: Began detailed work on each piece, 30 minutes per piece daily.
3-4 Months: Added scales practice (30 minutes daily) and began sight-reading (10 minutes daily).
2 Months: Started mock exams with my teacher every week.
1 Month: Performance practice - played for anyone who would listen!
Biggest Challenges
The Bach Partita
The constant triplets and maintaining steady tempo while keeping it musical was harder than I expected. My teacher had me practice with a metronome starting at 60bpm, only increasing when I could play perfectly.
Memory Work
All pieces must be memorized. I used:
- Score study away from the violin
- Mental practice before bed
- Recording and listening to myself
- Performing from memory regularly
Scales
Learning all major and minor scales in 3 octaves felt overwhelming at first. I created a practice chart and learned 2-3 scales per week rather than trying to do them all at once.
What Actually Helped
1. Regular lessons: Weekly lessons kept me accountable and on track.
2. Mock exams: Simulating exam conditions helped me manage performance anxiety.
3. Record everything: Listening back helped me hear mistakes I missed while playing.
4. Join the forum: Connecting with other students preparing for Grade 8 on this platform has been incredibly supportive.
5. Physical preparation: Learning to manage tension, breathe properly, and maintain good posture was as important as the notes.
Exam Day Tips
- Arrive 20 minutes early
- Warm up but don't exhaust yourself
- Remember the examiner wants you to succeed
- If you make a mistake, keep going
- Smile and be confident when you enter
Beyond the Exam
Whether I pass with distinction or merit, the preparation process has made me a much better musician. I've developed discipline, learned to work systematically, and can now play pieces I never thought possible.
To other students working toward Grade 8: you can do this! It takes time and dedicated practice, but the sense of achievement is worth every hour of work.
Wish me luck! My exam is in December.
