My Journey to the New York Philharmonic
Twenty-two years ago, I picked up the violin for the first time. Today, I sit in the second violin section of the New York Philharmonic. This is my story.
The Beginning
Like many young musicians, I started with the Suzuki method at age 6. My parents weren't musicians, but they recognized my interest when I wouldn't stop humming after hearing Vivaldi's Four Seasons in a grocery store.
The Turning Point
At age 15, I attended my first summer music festival. Being surrounded by other talented young musicians showed me what was possible. I returned home with a new level of dedication.
Juilliard Years
Getting into Juilliard was a dream come true, but it was just the beginning. The level of competition was intense. Every student was a former prodigy. I learned that talent alone wasn't enough - you needed discipline, resilience, and the ability to handle rejection.
The Audition Circuit
After graduation, I spent three years taking orchestra auditions. I made it to finals several times but always fell short. Each rejection was crushing, but I learned from every experience.
The NY Phil Audition
When the NY Phil posted an opening, I prepared like never before. Six months of focused practice, mock auditions every week, and working with a sports psychologist to manage performance anxiety.
The preliminary round was behind a screen - completely anonymous. Of 300+ applicants, 30 advanced. Then semi-finals: 10 advanced. Finally, the finals with just 3 candidates playing with the orchestra.
When I got the call, I couldn't believe it. All those years of practice, rejection, and perseverance had paid off.
